Motivation and why it is important

Have you ever had trouble staying motivated or struggled to keep moving forward towards your goals?

Before we start tackling those questions, let us first answer what motivation is.

Most often, we rarely consider motivation until the time we lose it – we’re in the zone one minute, completing the work with hardly an issue; then for some reason, we then feel uninspired and unfocused.

The mechanism that propels us to carry out a task or exhibit a behaviour is the best way to define motivation, that urge to finish what we started.

Every day, we are affected by two types: extrinsic and intrinsic

Extrinsic motivation describes outside forces that push us in the direction of a goal. These could be advantageous, like rental payment, or getting a really great deal; or detrimental, like the worry about getting bad reviews or negative criticism, or even failing to close a transaction.

Internal motivators on the other hand are referred to as intrinsic motivation. This might include the sense of purpose or self-worth, which drives us to pursue an endeavour and see it to its end until we’re satisfied.

Both can assist us in achieving our objectives, but each has a certain function.

Achieving both short-term and long-term targets is made much easier by external motivators. Things like finishing a property renovation, or securing some tenants for the foreseeable future.

Long-term commitments, such as having multiple properties and an extensive network, call for intrinsic motivators.

One thing I personally try (which I also recommend) to be able to stay motivated is to choose goals that interest me – this may be a short-term goal or a long-term one. Then, set small checkpoints within those goals. For example, if the long-term goal is to have five properties in a preferred area, each time a deal is closed then a celebration is merited. By having these little “checkpoints” and achieving them, we have something to look forward to.

It is important to stay motivated in whatever we choose to pursue. Without motivation, we risk experiencing burn out and eventually stopping altogether in achieving our goals.

With all this being said, what motivates you, or what goals have you set for yourself? I’d love to hear from you!
